483: giant fabric selfie

Hey, miss me? I miss you. Do people even read blogs anymore?

Couldn't sleep one night last week so I went up to the sewing room and started messing around.

My brains, I can't shut them off. Sometimes I lay in bed with my mind in a tornado. Usually I do. But for whatever reason that night instead of laying there cursing my brain problems (hashtag brainproblems), I got up and decided to play with fabric.

Why did it take me so long to tack up batting for a design wall? I only put it up a couple of weeks ago and I LOVE IT. Nothing fancy, batting and pushpins. You're smart so you probably already have a design wall, but if you don't- you need one. NEED.

Yup. I started a giant fabric selfie.

I didn't really mean to but I just started to throw scraps on the wall and since my default thing to draw and paint has always been faces, I started to make a face shape. I have always drawn and painted self portaits and of course I know my own face best, so ... why not?

Nothing like some giant fabric collage to harness the power of my mind for good instead of evil. Posted to instagram and went to bed.

I wasn't planning to really sew it down or do anything with it other than take the scraps down, but my ig and facebook pals encouraged me to keep going. Since I hadn't secured the fabric at all, I started over lightly glueing it (glue stick!) just enough to keep the pieces in place until I sew it down.

This is where I am so far.

I spent a little more time on it than the first go-round, so it looks different, more like me I think. But I still do like the first version a lot.

Close up:

Obviously I try not to get too precious and perfect with it.

I really feel like I'm just painting but with fabric. More like collage I guess.

Not sure what I will do with it next. I could keep going with more scraps or I could start sewing it down...

I struggle with the term 'art quilt'. We should talk about this sometime. Textile collage? Quilt? Art? I don't know. It's kind of weird to make a giant fabric selfie, but it's fun to play and finally do the things that I feel like I've done in my head for ages. Know what I mean?

Here's a little video of a bunch of the process photos so you can see how it changed and came together as I worked on it.

Not the cutest picture of me, but... for scale:

I'll let you know where I take it from here!

Just wanted to pop in and say hi and show you one of the things I've been up to. I also have a bunch of quilts that I have done for clients lately (click here for my longarm quilting services info! and yes I can fit you into the queue!) and I've been painting up a storm too.

Also, did I tell you I joined a roller derby league? Yeah, like a year ago! If we hang out on ig or fb you know this already. More on that soon.

I miss you. I should get back to blogging.

xoxo,

melissa
